More Stickers!

Nine rounds of voting are complete. We began with six categories and 26 sayings.  By December 28th we were down to two, and after a flurry of voting we ended in a dead heat.   (more…)

More Stickers!

Eight blog entries ago we started a process to boil down a long list of favorite (or in some cases, perhaps hackneyed) sayings. I use some the sayings/bumper stickers in the polls on a daily basis to make a point or pass a piece of information quickly. Short pithy statements are useful, at least some of the time.

During the last 8 blog entries, we have boiled the list down to a set of two finalists that now go head-to-head to select the king of the hill. Think about the questions. “ If you could only use one in 2019 . . . which would it be?” as you select your choice.

Our two finalists are . . .

“Stop Starting, Start Finishing”

“Plans are worthless but planning is everything”

It is time to pick just one!  The poll . . .

We will share the winner on New Year’s Eve day.

We continue the semi-finals, of the agile saying/bumper sticker face off with the second set of three categories.  The three categories are teams and leadership, process improvement and catch-all. The top three sayings are:

“Take it to the team”
“Don’t do stupid stuff”
“Plans are worthless but planning is everything”

Our process is simple.  Using the question “If you could only use one the following sayings during 2019 which would it be?” as a guide.  Which saying would you want in your verbal pocket?

Tomorrow we will host the final faceoff between the top sayings and bumper sticker thoughts.  Your votes have selected the top two sayings.

Today we being Round 2, the semi-finals, of the agile saying/bumper sticker face-off begins today.  Over six separate blog entries we have shared and you voted on sayings in six categories.

  1. Fail Fast
  2. Planning
  3. Teams and Leadership
  4. Flow
  5. Process Improvement
  6. Catch All

The sayings or bumper stickers as Gene Hughson calls them were collected and contributed during the year. In each category, there was a clear winner in the voting (no recounts needed).  Now it is time to pit the heavyweights in each category against each other. The top saying from the fail fast, planning and flow categories are:

“Fail fast, learn fast”
“YAGNI”  (You Aren’t Going to Need It)
“Stop Starting, Start Finishing”

Our process is simple.  Using the question “If you could only use one the following sayings during 2019 which would it be?” as a guide.  Which saying would you want in your verbal pocket?

Tomorrow we will tackle the second set of categories.

Today we conclude the quarterfinals of our agile saying/bumper sticker competition.  We will take tomorrow off to celebrate Christmas and then begin the semi-finals on Boxing Day.  In our final group, I have combined all of the sayings/bumper stickers that readers and listeners have suggested that did not neatly fit into other groups OR were suggested along the way.    Please pick your two favorites from today’s list!

A reminder of the logistics:  On December 26 and 27th we cross the categories for two semi-final polls with the final poll on December 28th.  The ultimate agile saying (at least according to the SPaMCAST community) will be announced on January 1st!

Getting the most value out of a process is important to every organization.  Flow is a combination of exactly what, how much, and how fast the output gets delivered. Picture putting your head underneath the outlet of a soft serve ice cream machine stuck in the on position.  The balance between how much, how fast and the mixture of chocolate and vanilla become hugely important. As with all important concepts, flow concepts often are shortened into bumper sticker statements.  The Software Process and Measurement listeners have suggested several. Which are your favorites? Pick your top two!

Day 3 – Team and Leadership – https://bit.ly/2Sdc29h

Leadership provides vision and the motivation needed to push the boundaries, change direction and challenge the status quo. Teams provide the muscle to make that vision happen.  Leadership and teamwork are core to EVERY human endeavor, agile is no different. Therefore, as with everything important, humans craft shorthand tools to evoke messages of leadership and teamwork.  The Software Process and Measurement family suggested several sayings. Which is the best?

If we are missing your favorite lets us know and we will include it in the final round!  (Anthony Mersino, thanks for reminding me of “go fast to go slow.”)
