Commitment by Maassen, Matts and Geary

This week we begin the read of Commitment – Novel about Managing Project Risk by Olav Maassen, Chris Matts and Chris Geary (second edition 2016) The book is a graphic novel that generally uses a six panel page drawn in a black and white style, reminiscent of Frank Miller’s Sin City series (one of my favorites).  Interspersed among the graphics are text in the form of diary entries and blobs (blog entries) to fill in the back story and for exposition on the Agile and lean topics found in the book.  Commitment has seven chapters and an epilogue.  My intent is to re-read Commitment in five weeks, including a recap. 

Chapter One.  Commitment is a story of enlightenment and Chapter One provides the context for the novel.  Larry is the project manager and Susan ‘s boss.  Susan, the book’s protagonist, is the project admin/whip.  Larry is taking advantage of Susan because Susan feels an obligation to Larry, who has supported her when other project managers would not hire her after an earlier project cratered.  (more…)

How to Measure Anything, Finding the Value of “Intangibles in Business” Third Edition

Next week we will begin the read of Commitment – Novel About Managing Project Risk by Olav Maassen and Chris Matts.  I am currently trying to determine the approach to the blog entries for this book.  I believe this will be a relatively quick read or re-read based on the pace and style of the book.  This is mostly a graphic novel (one of my favorite styles), which might put some off of the book.  Buy your copy today and start reading. Chapter 14 of How to Measure Anything, Finding the Value of “Intangibles in Business” Third Edition is the last chapter in the book.  Next week I will spend a few moments reflecting on the value I have gotten from this re-read; HOWEVER, the last chapter continues to deliver content, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  This chapter shows us:

  • A process for applying Applied Information Economics (which I used recently), and that
  • AIE is applicable in nearly every scenario.

Chapter 13 of How to Measure Anything, Finding the Value of “Intangibles in Business” Third Edition is the second chapter in the final section of the book.  Hubbard titled Chapter 13:  New Measurement Instruments for Management.  Hubbard shifts gears in this chapter to focus the reader on the new tools that our dynamic, electronically-tethered environment has created.  Here is a summary of the chapter in a few bullet points:

Chapter 11 of How to Measure Anything, Finding the Value of “Intangibles in Business” Third Edition begins the fourth and final section of the book.  This section addresses topics that are beyond the basics. Hubbard titled Chapter 11 Preferences and Attitudes: The Softer Side of Measurement.  The softer side is a euphemism for attitudes and opinions.  Here is a summary of the chapter in a few bullet points:

·         Measure opinions and feelings.

·         Design out bias in surveys and questions.

·         Observe opinions and feelings through trade-offs.

Chapter 9 of How to Measure Anything, Finding the Value of “Intangibles in Business” Third Edition titled, Sampling Reality: How Observing Some Things Tells Us about All Things.  Here is a summary of the chapter in four bullet points:

  1. You do not have measure the whole population to reduce uncertainty.
  2. The term statistical significance is not always the most important question to ask when collecting data.
  3. Experimentation is useful to reduce uncertainty.
  4. Regression is a powerful, but oft misunderstood, mechanism to understand what data is telling you!
